Agriculture Nepal

       AgricultureNepal

Agriculture dominated the economy. In the late 1980s, it was the livelihood for more than 90 percent of the population--although only approximately 20 percent of the total land area was cultivable--and accounted for, on average, about 60 percent of the GDP and approximately 75 percent of exports.

Since the formulation of the Fifth Five-Year Plan (1975-80), agriculture has been the highest priority because economic growth was dependent on both increasing the productivity of existing crops and diversifying the agricultural base for use as industrial inputs.

Agriculture Tour NepalIn trying to increase agricultural production and diversify the agricultural base, the government focused on irrigation, the use of fertilizers and insecticides, the introduction of new implements and new seeds of high-yield varieties, and the provision of credit.

The lack of distribution of these inputs, as well as problems in obtaining supplies, however, inhibited progress. Although land reclamation and settlement were occurring in the Tarai Region, environmental degradation--ecological imbalance resulting from deforestation--also prevented progress.

Agriculture Tour NepalAlthough new agricultural technologies helped increase food production, there still was room for further growth. Past experience indicated bottlenecks, however, in using modern technology to achieve a healthy growth. The conflicting goals of producing cash crops both for food and for industrial inputs also were problematic.

The production of crops fluctuated widely as a result of these factors as well as weather conditions. Although agricultural production grew at an average annual rate of 2.4 percent from 1974 to 1989, it did not keep pace with population growth, which increased at an average annual rate of 2.6 percent over the same period. Further, the annual average growth rate of food grain production was only 1.2 percent during the same period.

Agriculture Tour NepalThere were some successes. Fertile lands in the Tarai Region and hardworking peasants in the Hill Region provided greater supplies of food staples (mostly rice and corn), increasing the daily caloric intake of the population locally to over 2,000 calories per capita in 1988 from about 1,900 per capita in 1965. Moreover, areas with access to irrigation facilities increased from approximately 6,200 hectares in 1956 to nearly 583,000 hectares by 1990.

Rice was the most important cereal crop. In 1966 total rice production amounted to a little more than 1 million tons; by 1989 more than 3 million tons were produced. Fluctuation in rice production was very common because of changes in rainfall; overall, however, rice production had increased following the introduction of new cultivation techniques as well as increases in cultivated land. By 1988 approximately 3.9 million hectares of land were under paddy cultivation. In 1966 approximately 500,000 tons of corn, the second major food crop, were produced. By 1989 corn production had increased to over 1 million tons.

Other food crops included wheat, millet, and barley, but their contribution to the agricultural sector was small. Increased production of cash crops--used as input to new industries--dominated in the early 1970s. Sugarcane and tobacco also showed considerable increases in production from the 1970s to the l980s. Potatoes and oilseed production had shown moderate growth since 1980. Medicinal herbs were grown in the north on the slopes of the Himalayas, but increases in production were limited by continued environmental degradation. According to government statistics, production of milk, meat, and fruit had improved but as of the late 1980s still had not reached a point where nutritionally balanced food was available to most people. Additionally, the increases in meat and milk production had not met the desired level of output as of 1989.

Food grains contributed 76 percent of total crop production in 1988-89. In 1989-90 despite poor weather conditions and a lack of agricultural inputs--particularly fertilizer--there was a production increase of 5 percent. In fact, severe weather fluctuations often affected production levels. Some of the gains in production through the 1980s were due to increased productivity of the work force (about 7 percent over fifteen years); other gains were due to increased land use and favorable weather conditions.

  Jomsom Apple

Jomsom Apple Trekking NepalThe village of Marpha is situated in the Kali Gandaki Valley of the Annapurna Conservation Area at an altitude of 2.650 m. The exact geographical location is 28°45' Northern latitude, 83°42' Eastern longitude. It lies in a very remote region. The next road starts in Beni (2 to 3 days by foot); the next big market is Pokhara (3 to 4 days by foot). Marpha is also accessible by plane; from the small airport in Jomsom (1 hour by foot) it takes only half an hour to Pokhara by plane.

When we first decided to do a project on apple farming in Marpha, we did not know what to expect. Except for what was told to us by Prof. Haffner of our department we could gather only very little information about Marpha and its surroundings. So the idea was to decide on concepts and methods when we had had a chance to get a rough picture of the situation.

Once in Marpha we got the impression that almost every household seemed to be engaged in apple farming to some extent. Also any literature we found in the village library stretched out the economic importance of apple production for the region. Thus we decided to conduct interviews with a small number of sample households participating in apple farming. The teachers of the secondary school of Marpha helped us to select families for the interviews. They chose them according to their financial and social status and the approximate number of apple trees they own.

Once we had worked out a set of questions which seemed on one hand precise enough to provide us with an overview of the farmers' financial situation without on the other hand invading their privacy, we were facing the next severe problem: How to talk to Nepalese families who mostly speak only little English while our Nepali did not reach further than two or three words? Fortunately, one of the teachers, Mr. Shalikram Lamichhne, spent many hours of his spare time translating for us. Without his and many other people's friendly help and advice our work would not have been possible. The families we interviewed were without exception friendly and helpful and answered our questions willingly even though it took them at least half an hour of their free or even working time.

In the following chapters we first specify the objectives of the project and methods used. In the following results part we present after a short history of apple farming in the Marpha region a variety of economical and social aspects connected to apple farming. Finally, sustainability of large scale apple farming is discussed in the conclusion.

ecological

                                  ecological
There is increasing concern regarding the importance of ecological aspect in tourism promotion, particularly in the sphere of vacation tourism. Major tour operators feel that the holiday tourists are inclined to demand increasingly more perfect environment without any extra cost for it. Greater number of new generation tourists are not attracted by these green displays any more. Many factors such as ' tranquil place up in the Himalayas,' 'ancient unspoilt culture in the midst of unpolluted nature', 'green gardens profusely blossoming', 'awe-inspiring vistas and scenic panorama,' 'clean fresh water', 'pure non-polluted air,' 'rich heritage,' etc., have now become concept of 'Ecological Tourism,' commonly accepted as 'soft tourism

For developing tourist destinations like Nepal having special interest programs, the growing tendency among the clients seems to be that they prefer to arrange their itinerary through specialised tour operators, who possess long experience of promoting 'soft tourism,' as being commonly understood today as 'Eco-tourism. However, one has to be concerned with definite commitment to the quality of our ecological environment, apart from few exceptions that enthusiastic adventure tourists and mountain climbers anywhere in the world are used to taking helicopters everywhere for adventure sports such as heli-biking(running down the hill on mountain bikes), heli-skiing, heli-trekking, heli-mountaineering, heli-camping at high altitudes as in the Nepal Himalayas etc.
Eco Tour Nepal, Eco Tours in Nepal, Eco Tourism in NepalAs a result of operation of number of helicopter services, it is possible in Nepal to go on a heli-trek or a sky-trek, propelling the tourists to the higher summits of the Himalayan range and allowing them to stretch their legs and then quickly return after getting the breathtaking view of the snow-capped peaks. These are becoming the 'New Eco-tourism of future,', particularly for those busy affluent individuals and more comfort-seeking people, who have neither time nor the stamina to leg up the mountain terrains and steep hills undergoing a tough trekking program. These helitreks and excursions may not much tarnish the local ecological environment and the local culture. On the other hand, failure to introduce timely control measures on over visitation and infuses more rationality in planning such tour programs; there can be considerable adverse impact on the environment of the mountain areas in the long run.
Eco Tour Nepal, Eco Tours in Nepal, Eco Tourism in NepalVisitors in search of calmness of nature to the remote mountains could feel repulsive to the increasing volume of such excursion flights in the peaceful skies of the Mount Everest Region, where they come all the way to experience some undisturbed silence and tranquil nature away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Kathmandu. From environmental point of view, many sought after ecotourist destinations are gradually becoming fragile all over the world, although tourism promotion is considering them still unspoilt. Besides the cultural ecology and distinct importance of Nepal's resources of arts and culture, there is much scope of diversified tourism experience such as study of nature, wild life adventure in the Chitwan national park area, exclusive bird watching sanctuary like Koshi Tappu, trekking and hiking experience, mountain climbing, adventure holidays, rock climbing, mountain biking, kiting, hot air ballooning, river rafting, countryside camping, river beach holidays outside urban areas, rural holiday tourism and so on.
Eco Tour Nepal, Eco Tours in Nepal, Eco Tourism in NepalIn countries like Nepal where tourism is centred around natural attractions, although being closely linked with cultural interests, it has still to go a long way, as today one finds it more than often equated with eco or nature tourism. Even though the incoming visitors initiate their travel program by staying in luxury hotels in the capital valley of Kathmandu, but the real destinations which they have come to see are the splendour of the natural locations away in the countryside and the rural sectors or the farfetched hamlets in the shadow of the serene mountain environment. It is exactly here one will be conscious of the fact that these sensitive areas of our far-flung countryside are the traditional dwelling places of our native population, who constitute integral part of the exclusive local eco-system. If not properly preserved, even their traditional culture can be as fragile as that of the natural world. Surprising indeed, despite few tourists visiting these spots, yet their impact is considered to be disproportionately greater than in most of the developed destination areas. What has become crucial today for the Nepalese tourist industry is to impart serious attention in carefully planning and implementing Nepal's Eco-tourism. This is essential to sustain it to be of long-term benefit to our nature and the host community of the respective local areas.

Botanical

Botanical

Botanical Tour NepalSince ancient times, the people of Nepal have depended upon plants and plant products as a mainstay of everyday life. Today, almost 90% of Nepalese rely on subsistence agriculture,  with plants performing a vital role as arable crops, fodder, fruit and vegetables, fuel, building materials and medicines. Nepal is a multiethnic and multilingual country, with more than 60 different ethnic groups speaking about 75 languages. As one would expect, associated with this is a great diversity in plant lore. However, with increasing urbanisation and uptake of modern medicines and agricultural practices, much of this indigenous knowledge is now dwindling and largely only retained by village elders. There is real danger that this will be lost to future generations, and ethnobotanists are busy documenting the wealth of indigenous knowledge for posterity. So far over 1500 plants (1434 flowering plants, 65 ferns and their allies, and 8 conifers and their allies) have been recorded as having at least one use, including more than 650 used as food plants and over 1000 species of wild plants used for medicine.

Botanical Tour NepalBotanically Nepal forms a transition zone between the plants of the western Himalaya (including western Asiatic and Mediterranean elements) and the eastern Himalaya (with many Sino-Japanese elements). Adding variety to the mix are Tibetan Plateau (Central Asiatic) plants from the north and humid tropical species of the lowland plains (Terai) from the Gangetic plains of India and further a field into Indochina. Central to this is the Himalayan range itself, a unique series of mountain chains formed by geologically recent mountain building events. These young massifs contribute to the diversity of plants, and have provided barriers to and corridors through which plants migrated during the ice ages.

Yarsha Gomba

Yarsha Gomba Trekkingh Nepal
Yarsagumba with its Latin name cordyceps sinesis literally means summer plant and winter insect in Tibetan.  Mountain of Botanical

Garden of Botanical Mountain NepalOut of four season,  Monsoon starts in June when heavy rains of the south-west monsoon arrive. The High Himalaya range blocks the northwards passage of the moist airs, increasing rainfall in Nepal and keeping the areas beyond in deep rain shadow. These same mountains also act as a barrier to the cold fronts sweeping across from central Asia, protecting Nepal and northern India and giving them warmer winters. The high mountains, deep river valleys and lowland plains combine with the effects of the summer monsoon and dry winter to form bewildering array of habitats in what is a relatively small country like Nepal. The botanical exploration has extended beyond the capital Kathmandu since the 1950's, and botanical experts estimate that over 6600 species will be listed for Nepal after exploring even the remotest part of Nepal.

Garden of Botanical Mountain NepalThe Shivapuri National Park covers the area of 144 sq km which is the major watershed supplying drinking water to the capital city of Kathmandu.  Lying in the transition zone between the subtropical and temperate climatic zones, its diverse vegetation is composed of pine, oak, rhododendron and others.  The park is rich in wild mushrooms about 129 species in total. The wildlife habitats Himalayan black bear, leopard, jungle cat and rhesus monkeys.  The park is home to over 177 species of birds including 9 threatened species and over 100 species of butterflies including rare and threatened.

Godavari Botanical garden is located on the foot of Pulchowki hill. It consists of mainly open parkland type habitats and several fast flowing streams.
